EXPLORING SCIENCE
Exploring Science on Thurs. Feb. 9th will continue on volcanoes and their dangers. After a quick review of “Ring of Fire”, Cascade volcanoes (about 2 dozen), and types of volcanoes and eruption types, we will look at the following eruptions:
- Heimaey, Iceland (how people fought the lava) (1973)
- Surtsey Island, Iceland (rising) from the ocean (1964) - Mt. Mazama (Crater Lake) & Wizard Island (7,700 yrs ago) - Yellowstone super volcano (Latest - 631,000 yrs ago) - Video of the Mt. St. Helens eruption (1980) Finally, what happened at Lake Nyos in Cameroon that killed thousands of people and animals in a “cold eruption”.
Thursday Feb. 9th at 10:30 a.m. in the Astoria Senior Center.
Volcanic lava samples will be available for viewing, plus 2 artifacts from Pompeii (79 CE eruption). |
